A well-known landmark of Kharkiv is the Freedom Square (Ploshcha Svobody), which is currently the second largest city square in Europe, and the 7th largest square in the world. A monumental statue of Lenin was erected in the square in 1964.
Shevchenko’s Park is located near the Freedom Square. This is a wonderful place for having a rest. Fountains, comfortable benches, cafes, bars and the zoo are situated in the park. You can also see a monumental statue of Shevchenko there.
There is also a zoo in Kharkiv. It is a facility in which animals are confined within enclosures, displayed to the public, and in which they may also be bred. Kharkiv zoo defines its aims as recreation, education, research, and conservation.
The main street of Kharkiv is Sumskaya Street. A lot of prestigious cafes, restaurants and shops are situated right here.
Opposite the Opera-House in the centre of the city you can find the Zerkalnaya Struya (Mirror Stream). This wonderful fountain with many of benches is an ideal recreation zone.
The Kharkov planetarium is a theatre built primarily for presenting educational and entertaining shows about astronomy and the night sky and for training in celestial navigation. There is the large dome-shaped projection screen onto which scenes of stars, planets and other celestial objects can be made to appear and move realistically to simulate the complex 'motions of the heavens'.
